527 Teeth Removed From 7-Year-Old Chennai Boy's Mouth
The swollen right cheek of 7-year-old Ravindranath looked like symptoms of decayed tooth to his parents. But when the dentist examined he realized, tucked inside his right tiny lower jaw were 527 teeth. They had to be surgically removed, leaving 21 normal and healthy teeth.
Doctors at the Saveetha Dental College said that it had taken only a few minutes for them to convince the boy’s parents that a surgery was necessary. Once they agreed, dentists removed the abnormal teeth in a surgery that lasted nearly five hours. “This is not just about our surgical accomplishment. It’s about the need to improve pediatric dental care and create better awareness about oral hygiene and dentistry among people.”
Surgery was inevitable. Instead of breaking open the bone from the sides and leaving a large hole, we drilled into it from the top. Luckily, he did not require any reconstruction of the jaw Dr Senthilnathan said.
